A Message to the Millennial Hunting Generation

We have grown up in a generation that values and expects instant gratification. We order a package from Amazon and it arrives in 2 days. When we have the urge to listen to a song, we just download it. We want to learn a new skill, so we watch a 3-minute video and can conquer the skill. This instant gratification puts the world at our finger tips and yet so many of us are not satisfied with life.

We think we have all the answers to everyday issues, yet we still feel like we are sinking deeper and deeper into a rut. For those who share the same feeling as me, we know the only release from the stress and the unhappiness is through hunting. And why is that? Because, hunting success is directly related to the effort put in. Instant gratification doesn’t exist in the hunting world. Everything that you do impacts the outcome of a hunt. And that reason alone is why we cling to this passion. The thrill and the challenge of trying to outsmart that old tom, or that mature whitetail is what is so rewarding.

But this also comes as a doubled edge sword. We value that this part of our life is incapable of being instantly gratified, but we are constantly reminded of our inability.  Since we are so connected to the world around us, social media weighs heavy on our minds. We come home from an empty-handed hunt, feeling rewarded that we at least saw a few deer. And the “NEWS FEED” pops up on our phones. And of course, it is filled with monster trophies, that everyone is getting but you. So, you begin to doubt yourself, you begin to feel spiteful towards those who have had success, and you become discouraged.

This often leads to you shooting the first legal animal that passes by, so you can cope with the urge to succeed. But unfortunately, this is once again a kick below the belt, because you must share your success online. You “HAVE” to tell the world you succeeded. And this is generally followed by stating that the buck or turkey is bigger than it is. You do this to justify your decisions to harvest the animal. Then you are destroyed online by trolls and people looking to get a reaction out of you. This only makes things worse. You are then again lost in your ways and feel like even the one thing that makes you happy, will ultimately be your downfall.

But, I am here to tell you, that I also have felt the same thing that you are going through. I am a millennial and I have found a way to cope and better myself. I started Cro-Mag Outdoors with my 3 best friends, to get us out of the everyday rut of a 20-something year old.
